FAQ - Fequently asked questions
What exactly happens on the tour?
You ride pillion on the back of a motorbike with your own private local host. Over four hours you visit five different neighbourhoods and eat five dishes — each one chosen because it's the best version of that dish in Penang. No fixed route, no group, no script. Just you, your host, and the food.
How is this different from a walking food tour?
Penang's best food is not concentrated in one area. The best Char Kway Teow is in a different neighbourhood from the best Asam Laksa. The only honest way to cover five dishes in four hours without rushing is on a motorbike. Walking tours stay in Georgetown heritage area. We go where the food and local people actually are.
How many people are on the tour?
One guest, one host, one motorbike. Always private. If you're travelling as two, we provide two hosts and two bikes — same experience in parallel
Is it safe to ride on the back of a motorbike?
Yes. All our hosts are experienced local riders who navigate Penang's streets every day. Helmets are provided and fitted before every ride. We have had no safety incidents.
What if it rains?
We ride. Or we wait and ride. Penang rain is warm, usually brief, and over in half an hour. Rain ponchos are included and part of the experience. If conditions are genuinely unsafe we will reschedule at no charge.
Do I need experience on motorbike?
None at all. You are a passenger. Guests from 9 to 80 have done this comfortably.
Is the street food safe to eat?
Yes. Every vendor we use has been feeding Penangites for decades. We eat at these stalls ourselves regularly. Penang's hawker food culture has a long and clean track record.
Can you accommodate dietary requirements?
Yes. Muslim-friendly and vegetarian options are available on request. Please let us know when booking so we can plan your route accordingly.
What if I have a food allergy?
Let us know in advance and we will plan around it. We know every vendor and every dish.
What is included in the price?
Everything. All food, all drinks, beer if you want one, helmet, rain poncho. No cash needed on the day, no hidden costs.
What are the start times?
Morning rides 9AM–1PM. Afternoon rides 3PM–7PM, designed specifically around cruise ship schedules. Evening rides 6PM–10PM.
Where does the tour start?
We pick you up at Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal or your hotel. Our operations manager will WhatsApp you before the tour to confirm the details.
What is your cancellation policy?
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time. No questions asked.
Can I book for a cruise excursion?
Yes — our 3PM ride is designed specifically for cruise passengers. You won't miss a sailing. If you're staying overnight in Penang, the evening ride is an awesome option — the city after dark is a different experience entirely.
Why should I book here instead of GetYourGuide or Viator?
Same price. Same experience. But book directly here and you receive a complimentary copy of Simply Penang — a photography book by Penang-born photographer David ST Loh. One per booking. Only available through streetbitetours.com.
